Happy Friday Girlfriends!
I must say Friday truly is my favorite day of the week!! I just wanted to say hello and explain that my post for this week will be shared via a guest post from the blog Sincerely Kasey Kay. I was honored that Kasey thought of me to share with her audience while she’s away on vacation (I could sure use one of those). I wasn’t too sure of what to talk about but she told me just to be myself just as I am with my girlfriends, and that’s exactly what I did! You may view my post here.
Cheers to a fantastic weekend!!
So we all know the month of February is Black History Month and I would like to take a moment to speak about two ladies I recently researched. Their names are “Sadie” and “Bessie” Delany better known as the Delany Sisters. Sadie, the oldest born September 18, 1889 in Lynch’s Station, Va., was the first black person permitted to teach domestic science in New York high schools. Bessie was born September 3, 1891 in Raleigh, NC and later became the second black female dentist licensed to practice in New York. Their parents were faculty members at St. Augustine School, now University, in Raleigh, NC. These were great accomplishments for these ladies as well as their parents, but they are also known for the record they hold in the Guinness Book of records for being the oldest authors to publish a book. Their second book titled “The Delany Sisters’ Book of Everyday Wisdom” was published in 1994. Sadie at age 105 and Bessie at age 103. During an interview it was noted that neither were married and they joked about their long lives being due in part to never having husbands to “worry them to death.” Bessie passed at age 104 in September 1995 leaving Sadie to write a third book about life without her sister. Sadie later passed at age 109 in January 1999.
Isn’t it great know that with old age comes even more wisdom. Wisdom beyond measure that it is possible to do such things as write books at 100+ years of age. These were some remarkable ladies and I would like them to know they have truly inspired me!
Remember ladies nothing is impossible at any age! You can do anything you set your mind to!! Be inspired and be encouraged on this day and each day forward that you have a purpose!!!
“My girlfriends there thru thick and thin, my girlfriends there for anything, my girlfriends…”
We all remember the hit series Girlfriends right? Let me tell ya’ll I LOVED THAT SHOW!! (And still do =D I keep it on my You Tube playlist) Watching the stories of the 4 main characters on our screens for so many years kinda felt like a since of home. Now neither I nor my girlfriends’ story lines are quite as complex as that of those characters, but we are still quite unique in our own sense of the word.
Let me school on a little history lesson real quick…So our story dates back to 1997 (okay I’m telling our age lol) where our sister circle first began. I remember being nervous about starting high school and meeting new friends until I walked into my 9th grade English class. This is where I met Tamara. We quickly became close and felt like we were “twins” separated at birth lol. Moving this story right along, Tamara knew Erin from middle school, but I didn’t meet her until 10th grade in our English class. Erin and I quickly developed a bond, just as Tamara and I. Tamara met Tasha thru their church youth group but Tamara, Tasha and Erin all attended college together (is your head spinning yet) which is where I met and developed a friendship with Tasha. Whew okay so although we did not meet each other at the same time, God had a divine plan for our paths to cross and ultimately lead to a lifetime of sisterhood.
Growing up my Mama always told me that as I got older the Lord would reveal my “true friends”. Well at the time I thought that I had it all figured out with my many different pockets of friends. (Come on I know I’m not the only one that didn’t always listen to her mother.) I felt like everyone in my circle at the time was #TeamKT; however the lie detector test proved, “That was a LIE”. I have shared some of my most memorable, exciting, darkest, lowest moments with this bunch. As we get older and our lives take different turns, we are not always able to get up like we used to and that’s okay. When you have a true friendship, better yet a covenant relationship, no matter how long we’ve been apart, when we come back together it’s like we never missed a beat. I would have to agree with my Mama and say that yes the Lord has revealed that this crew is with me no matter what. (And I with them =D)
So the question comes to mind, what do you consider to be the definition or attributes of a true girlfriend? While you think, I will give you mine…
- A confidant that I can trust with any and everything, knowing that she will only take it to our Heavenly Father in prayer.
- Someone I can go to for advice, correction, a listening ear when I need to vent without any interruptions, a shoulder to cry on
- A lady that will make my problems hers and will not only help work through them but also assist in coming up with a solution (Even if she helped cause some lol J)
- Ultimately someone that has touched my heart, pushed me towards greatness and encourages me to reach my highest potential
Tamara, Erin, Tasha…. My girlfriends, there thru thick and thin; My girlfriends, there thru anything, my girlfriends….
“A man who has friends must himself be friendly, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.”
